**Circa:** 2006 VMware Server was a free product designed to replace the old [[VMware GSX]] product. We built VMware Server in about 3 months, duct-taping together parts of GSX and two separate major versions of [[VMware Server]]. This work eventually inspired the development of [[VMware Workstation]] 8, which supported remote VM connectivity with [[ESX]].
